How to compare policies

We don’t sell insurance and don’t rank policies. Here’s what to line up side by side when you compare quotes from insurers or comparison marketplaces.

Start with your card’s gaps

Open your card’s page and note what it doesn’t list or caps low. Those are the lines to compare. Note what your card already lists, with its limits and payment rules, so you can compare like for like.

What to line up

  • Trip cost insured and the trip cancellation and interruption limits.
  • Covered reasons for cancellation, and whether a “cancel for any reason” option is offered and on what conditions.
  • Emergency medical limit, whether it is primary or secondary, and any deductible.
  • Medical evacuation limit.
  • Pre-existing condition terms and any time limit for buying the policy to qualify.
  • Trip delay and baggage limits, and how many hours before delay cover starts.
  • Exclusions (for example, adventure activities) and how claims are filed.
  • Price, for the same trip details, travelers and coverage.

Where quotes come from

You can get quotes from individual insurers, or from comparison marketplaces that show several insurers’ plans side by side (Squaremouth, VisitorsCoverage and InsureMyTrip are examples). Policies are sold by licensed insurers and agents, so ask them, not us, which plan fits your situation.

We have no partnerships with any insurer or marketplace right now. If that changes, links will be clearly marked “Paid link” and listed on our affiliate disclosure page. Not insurance advice: disclaimer.
