Trip delay

Pays for meals, lodging and essentials when a common carrier delays you past a set number of hours.

What it is

Trip delay reimbursement pays reasonable extra costs, such as a hotel night or meals, when a plane, train, bus or cruise is delayed. The trigger is a number of hours (6 or 12 on the cards we checked) or, on some cards, an overnight stay.

What to check

  • Hours: 6 hours is much easier to reach than 12.
  • Limit: per traveler or per trip, and some cards cap claims per year.
  • Round trip rule: some issuers require a round trip paid entirely with the card.
  • Covered reasons: usually weather, equipment failure and similar; check the guide.

These are general descriptions. The exact terms on your card are in its Guide to Benefits. Not insurance advice.
