Cell phone protection

Pays to repair or replace your phone if it is stolen or damaged, when you pay your monthly wireless bill with the card.

Filter cards with cell phone protection

What it is

Cell phone protection reimburses repair or replacement of a phone listed on your wireless bill when it is stolen or damaged, as long as you pay that monthly bill with the card. Cards that publish terms set a limit per claim, a deductible and a cap on claims per 12 months.

What to check on your card

  • Per-claim limit and deductible: for example up to $600 or $1,000 per claim, minus a $25 to $100 deductible on the cards we checked.
  • Claims per year: often 2 or 3 claims per 12 months, with a yearly maximum.
  • Paying the bill: coverage usually starts the month after you pay the wireless bill with the card, and stops if you switch cards.
  • What isn’t covered: many guides exclude phones that are simply lost, and cosmetic damage that doesn’t affect how the phone works.
  • Order of payment: most card coverage pays after any other insurance, such as a carrier plan.

These are general descriptions. The exact terms on your card are in its Guide to Benefits. Not insurance advice.

What does “not listed” mean for cell phone protection?

It means cell phone protection wasn’t on the issuer page or benefit guide we read for that card. Not listed doesn’t mean not covered: the card’s Guide to Benefits may still include it. Check your Guide to Benefits.

What should I check about cell phone protection in my Guide to Benefits?

The per-claim limit and deductible; how many claims are allowed per 12 months; whether you must pay the full monthly wireless bill with the card and from when coverage starts; and whether lost phones or cracked screens are excluded. Check your Guide to Benefits.

Not listed for your card?

Not listed doesn’t mean not covered. Read the protection section of your card’s Guide to Benefits, or call the number on the back of the card, before you buy or file a claim.
